The Annual Members Meeting of Nevada Chess, Inc. will happen on Saturday, April 9th 2016 at the Las Vegas Chess Center, 3160 S. Valley View Drive, Las Vegas NV 89102. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 2 PM, but please check nevadachess.org for late changes if you wish to attend. The results of the 2016 election will be tabulated from the ballots and announced at that time.

This will be the last Nevada Chess Bulletin mailed to members, except for the January issue which will continue to include a ballot for members to vote in that year’s election of officers. For news about chess in Nevada, please check this website regularly.

Once again, Nevada Chess, Inc. sponsored our Annual Nevada State Scholastic Tournament, hosted by the Las Vegas Day School. There were 191 young players playing in the four sections, K-3, K-5, K-8 and K-12, with many individual and team trophies, medals and certificates distributed during the awards ceremonies. A report can be found below, including a link to complete cross tables of the final results. The Nevada State Scholastic 2016 took place Saturday, March 12th at the Las Vegas Day School, 190 players from all over the valley and even Reno participated, the event was organized by Nevada Chess.
The players were grouped in four sections based on age and school grades: K3, K5, K8, K12, with sections K3, and K5 playing six rounds and K8, K12 five rounds. The venue offered a lot of space for kid activities in between rounds such as basketball, soccer, etc. the weather was also magnificent.
Over the board the action was intense and very competitive, K3 and K5 were dominated by Shenlone Wu and Chris Bao respectively with a perfect score of 6 out of 6, K8 section was a tough one with a few high rated players on the roster, at the end when the smoke of the battle cleared, Aayan Patel from Reno emerged on first place, he also will be the State representative for the Barber tournament. The K12 section as expected was a highly contested section, Naomi Santiago and Ishan Saran tied for first with 4.5 points each but tiebreaks favored Naomi, who became the first female ever in the State history to win the High school championship. Naomi is planning to play on both, the Susan Polgar girls tournament and on the 2016 National girls tournament of Champions, the later one will be held on Indianapolis on July- August, representing Nevada. The Co- Champion Ishan Saran will present us at the prestigious Denker tournament.
This year the top finisher in each event will also receive a $5,000 scholarship that can be used at any University or College. In addition, the top finisher in the Denker Tournament will receive a spot in the US Junior Championship, the top finisher in the Barber Tournament will receive a spot in the US Cadet Championship, and the top finisher in the National Girls Tournament will receive a spot in the US Junior Girls Championship. The top finishers in the three events will also qualify for the World Youth Tournament.
The team’s competition was also very exciting with St Viator Catholic School winning K3 and K5 followed by Saint Elizabeth Seaton Catholic School on second, and Las Vegas Day School on third. The K12 was won by Advance Technologies Academy power house, they were the winners of the 2014, and 2015 edition too.
We would like to congratulate the winners; we wish them the best! Thank you to all the participants and to the volunteers and the support team from Las Vegas Day School. Thank you also to the parents for their support for Chess. We will meet again on 2017!

On January 9th and 10th Elliott Liu defended his State Championship title against Mike Zaloznyy.  After both won their semi-final matches against Virgil Reyes and Ernest Hong respectively in Tonapah last fall they agreed to play the final back home in Las Vegas.  Because of scheduling conflicts the match was not played until last week.

This issue of the Nevada Chess Bulletin marks the 26th anniversary of our affiliate becoming the only official state affiliate recognized by the U.S. Chess Federation to represent USCF members in the State of Nevada. Nevada Chess Inc. was formerly known as the Nevada State Chess Association, or NSCA for short, before that name and acronym were stolen from us by scurrilous scoundrels.

I refer you for reports on Nevada chess activities to our website, NevadaChess.org, that might include recent reports on the Nevada State Individual, Team and Quick Chess Championship Events held in Tonopah at the end of September.

Finally, we welcome and encourage, at this time every year, members to throw their hat in the ring for a position on the Board of Directors of Nevada Chess, Inc. There are four (4) positions open this year. You can find a form for such beside the standard membership form near the end of this bulletin. The term of service for a Nevada Chess board member is two years. Each year the term of service of either three or four of our seven board members expires. In 2016 the terms of service of four of our current board members (Charles Chinnici, Daniel Conver, Allen Magruder, and Jerome Weikel) will expire. In 2016 there will be an election to fill the four board member positions that will become vacant when these board members’ terms of service expire.

Nevada Chess is now seeking nominations for these four board positions that will be available in 2016. Nominees must be or become members of both the United States Chess Federation and Nevada Chess, Inc. on February 1, 2016. Nominees must also be at least 18 years of age. The deadline for nominations is December 31, 2015. In 2016, the list of nominees will be published on the Nevada Chess website. A ballot will be sent to all Nevada Chess, Inc. members. Ballots will be counted at the annual membership meeting in the spring of 2016.
