Hello all, this is a review of the Barber Tournament. As many of you may know, Royce
was the 2012 K-8 Nevada State Champion, and therefore earn the right to represent the
state of Nevada in the K-8 Barber Tournament of Champions.
In his first game, he was white against the Maryland Representative rated 1992. He is
the #44 14-year old in the country. The game was going well, until move 27. Bc1? Qb3!
The computer disagrees, but he felt his position felt apart after these moves,
especially considering the Qb3 came rather fast. He felt Bd6 would have been much
better.

In the second game, he was black against the Illinois representative rated 2117. He is
the #11 11-year old in the country. This was probably Royce best game in his life.
After 41 moves, even though Royce felt he was slightly better, his opponent offered a
draw, and he accepted.

In the third game, he was white against the Louisiana representative rated 1616 (and
one of the only two opponents rated below Royce.) This was a rather easy win for him.
He was ahead the whole game, and when 23. …. Rhf8? He countered with 24. Rg1 c4?

In the fourth game, he was black against the Arizona representative rated 1895. He is
the #22 11-year old in the country. He had played against this opponent twice before,
once in Vegas (loss), and once in Arizona (draw.) The game was pretty even until 31.

In the fifth game, he was white against the South Carolina representative rated 1931.
He is the #65 14-year old in the country. This was easily Royce’s worst game. After a
bad opening, things went downhill quickly. The best thing about this game was that,
afterwards, the two had an extensive post-mortem, and played some blitz games.

In the sixth and final game, he was black against the Georgia representative rated
1617. While he really wanted to win, this had draw written from the beginning.
Here is the game: 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e5 3. dxe5 Ng4 4. Bf4 Nc6 5. Nf3 Bb4 6. Nbd2 Qe7 7.

Going in this tournament, his first National Tournament (with the exception of the
West National Youth Action Tournament), I figured that he could score 2 out 6, and
that is what happened. While not a spectacular performance, I think he played well
(with the exception of the fifth game,) and with a few different moves, he could have
scored more points.
I apologize for not writing a more technical review, but my knowledge/skill of chess
does not permit. However, feel free to do so if you would like.
Most importantly, he seemed to have had fun, and enjoyed the experience.
